This will be a family workshop for parents and young adults ages 13 to 18 that will address what happens when a young person with a disability finishes high school and faces the new tasks, opportunities, and challenges associated with becoming an adult. The changes can be daunting for all involved. There can be dramatic shifts in needs, available supports, and sources of funding. This workshop for families with young people with disabilities will help the teen and their family to navigate this process.
There will be two concurrent three-hour sessions, one for parents and family members, and the other for the teens themselves. Both workshops will cover similar topics, including discussion and hands-on activities, but with a different focus for the parents and the teens. The groups will be combined near the end of the workshop in a transition panel.
The parent workshop will emphasize the nuts-and-bolts of the transition process, including resources and supports, as well as thinking creatively about possible futures.
The young adult workshop will focus on helping the young people explore their own dreams and visions, as well as providing some useful information about what to expect.
The groups will be combined for a transition panel, consisting of young people and family members who are willing to share their own transition experiences.
