Puberty and Autism: Social Skill Development in Pre-adolescence and Adolescence

Social skills seem to be an apparent deficit in children with autism. Even when some children appear to be indistinguishable from their peers, around age 7 or 8, the social norms and rules change and some children with autism have a hard time following these "hidden" social rules. Also, ages 8 through adolescence, is the range for beginning puberty. Puberty can bring a whole new set of challenges and special circumstances to consider.

This forum aims to give parents, caregivers and others involved in the care of children with Autism insights on several key areas. This program is also designed for BCBAs and BCaBAs who specialize in adolescent treatment.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify successful strategies for implementing a social skills group
  • List special considerations when preparing for puberty
  • Understand parental concerns during puberty
