Food, Fitness and Fun: A Program for Weight Management for Children with ASD and/or DD

Pediatric obesity is a growing problem not only in the general pediatric population but also in children with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention deficit disorders (ADD) (1). The health risks associated with obesity may be exacerbated in this population by medical concerns, medication use, sensory processing, limited opportunity for physical play and activity and rigid food choices including highly processed foods. Addressing weight issues presents unique challenges in this population.

Pasadena Child Development Associates’ innovative F3, or Food, Fitness and Fun program, was developed to address obesity in children with developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. The program is based on the DIR®/Floortime approach. The DIR® philosophy suggests that social-emotional development is the core area for inspiring and organizing growth in the child. Specifically, the program considers the developmental, physiological, sensory and emotional underpinnings of food choice and appetite, the influence of family relationships on eating behavior and the need for health promoting diet and behaviors for all children with consideration of their diagnosis and medical nutritional needs.

This workshop will introduce the program and provide training for its use for group or individual intervention. All participants, including physical therapists, dietitians, psychologists, occupational therapists, nurses and educators will receive the F3 curriculum manual as part of their participation.

Speakers: Patricia Novak, MPH, RD, CLE and Kristen Van Rooyan, MPH, RD
