Dr. Tom Pomeranz - Day 1: Supported Routines, Day 2: Enhancing Leadership Through Personal Power

Supported Routines
Thursday, May 8, 2014
This training is for direct support staff and supervisors from all programs (residential, day/work services, ILS, SLS, after school).

This lively and informative session brings home the point that “habilitation is not a goal – it is a result.” People grow, develop and become more independent as a result of participating in meaningful life activities. The session details how supports should be delivered to allow individuals with significant cognitive, physical and/or behavioral challenges to participate in all aspects of their life. The session provides the participants with insight as to how our perceptions and expectations serve as barriers in providing support. The four supported routine outcomes (facilitating connections, maximizing independence, enhancing self-worth, and producing self-determination) are detailed and their life enhancing effects are reviewed. The maxim that “without a presence, there is no future” services as the foundation for this session.

Enhancing Leadership Through Personal Power
Friday, May 9, 2014
This training is for supervisors, managers and administrators from all programs (residential, day/work services, ILS, SLS, after school).

In this session, Dr. Tom Pomeranz provides the attendees with a best practice approach to Team Building. The session details specific suggestions regarding how attendees can enhance their personal power and increase their effectiveness as team players. Tom emphasizes that people tend to resist management but are inspired by leadership. Thus, the ability of team members to exercise personal power and minimize the use of positional authority will create unity and solidify collegial relationships. The sessions’ goals include: working as a member of a team, knowing the qualities of a good leader, understanding how change can help one achieve goals, recognizing conflict and how to resolve it.

Tom uses the concept of “critical moments” as the foundation for enhancing the effectiveness of team members. The team members’ response to critical moments is the determinant of the overall success of the team. Among the critical moments commonly faced by team members analyzed in this session are: response to emergency situations, follow-up to staff inquiries, accuracy in submitting forms and documents, being prompt in arriving at scheduled meetings and conducting staff performance evaluations. The session also includes several simulated group activities, which help reinforce and clarify the important concepts presented. The goal of the session is to promote a sense of empowerment and self-determination in all attendees, providing staff with a vision and motivation to enhance job satisfaction.
