Autism: Feeding and Nutrition Challenges

This intermediate-level course will be presented from an interdisciplinary team approach. It will explore the complex challenges that children on the autism spectrum face during mealtime, whether it is at home, school or in a community environment. Video case studies will be reviewed and discussed, considering the complexities of oral-motor and swallowing abilities, sensory processing, behavior challenges, gastrointestinal symptoms and nutritional needs. The importance of the parent-child dyad will be highlighted, addressing how it should be utilized during treatment, planning and intervention.

This course is intended for Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Registered Dietitians, Marriage and Family Therapists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Psychologists, Registered Nurses, Early Interventionists, Educators, and any professionals involved in the care of children with autism.
