As we celebrate 60 years of service, Lanterman Regional Center is proud to recognize Berta Suazo for her extraordinary commitment to our community. Ms. Suazo is the parent of Alberto Suazo, an individual who has been served by Lanterman Regional Center since March 1997. For the past 30 years, she has dedicated herself to supporting the Lanterman community as a peer support partner, support group facilitator, and parent volunteer.
During the pandemic, Ms. Suazo further demonstrated her dedication by assisting with PPE and food box distribution events. She continues to mentor Spanish-speaking families, build meaningful relationships, and encourage engagement and participation throughout the community. As a lifelong learner, Ms. Suazo exemplifies the importance of training and education as tools to empower families to advocate for their loved ones. El Impacto del COVID-19 en las Familias ~ La Historia de Nuestra Familia

El Covid-19 nos impactó a todo el mundo entero, pus se presento una pandemia global. Mis hijos y yo, al igual que muchas otras familias, nos infectamos y tuvimos que aislarnos de los demás y permanecer en casa. Note como mis hijos cambiaron y se decaían. Fue muy impactante no poder salir a trabajar, y a ver perdido de un día para otro las rutinas de costumbre. Mi hijo Alberto que vive con el Autismo, fue mucho mas impactado pues todo era confuso y había cambiado tan de repente. Asimilar lo que estaba pasando no fue fácil ara Alberto. ¿Preguntaba donde estaba la pandemia? Porque teníamos que vacunarnos y usar cubrebocas.
Sin tener ninguna otra opción, afronte la situación. Yo tendría que ser mas fuerte a como fuera lugar porque mis hijos me necesitaban. Sabía que tendría que ser positiva y buscar alivio dentro de una experiencia negativa y llena de incertidumbre. El impacto fue muy duro para mí para superar y evaluar la emergencia que se presento en casa. No fue fácil, pero me di cuenta de lo importante que es la mama en el hogar. Mis hijos, aunque ambos ya adultos, Estaban solos y sin dirección. Empecé a dedicarles más tiempo y a comprender más a fondo lo que les sucedía para poder ayudarlos. En esos momentos retrocedí mucho a la educación de tantos anos que me ha brindado el centro regional Lanterman, y poco a poco empezaron a surgir ideas de como lidiar con la pandemia.
Empecé a trabajar más cercanamente con Alberto para educarlo sobre la pandemia y como mantener su mente ocupada en cosas positivas y no en las preguntas infinitas. Me enfoque en el bienestar de mi hijo pues su mundo cambio completamente, y el golpe fue inmenso. Ese tiempo fue difícil de dominar, pero no me di por vencida. Busque el equipo de personas que trabaja con mi hijo la psicóloga Ana Delia Hernandez y implementamos estrategias para que el se enfocara en los intereses creativos para pasar el tiempo, mantenerse ocupado, y para disminuir emociones negativas.
También recibí ayuda de la gerente del City Bank, Dolores Martinez, unto con el joven, Edward Canton que también trabaja en el banco. Con ayuda de ellos, Alberto ha aprendido como cambiar, sacar y depositar dinero en el banco. También sabe cómo usar la tarjeta de débito cuando hace compras. Estoy muy agradecida con la comunidad por la ayuda a mi hijo para que siga aprendiendo. También estoy agradecida con el grupo de Autodeterminación en el cual pertenezco. Este grupo se trata de independizarse de lo tradicional para que los jóvenes puedan seguir desarrollando y completando metas de aprendizaje.
Los deportes, ejercicios, tecnología. Socialización son unos temas que más gustaría que mi hijo desarrollara mas fondo. Al momento Alberto juega en una liga de boliche los sábados y es muy hábil en el deporte. Se divierte bastante y tiene amistades en la liga. También sabe cómo comunicarse por teléfono, mandar texto y hacer video llamadas. Estar en contacto con él es importante para su seguridad y para cuando necesito comunicarme con él durante sus paseos a la comunidad Alberto le encanta conocer y visitar tiendas nuevas que tienen las cosas que le interesan como, por ejemplo, le fascinan las revisas cómicas, los dibujos japoneses anime y los juegos electrónicos.
Adicionalmente, Alberto también es empleado en la compañía Shredders, una empresa de servicios de trituración de papel. EL Gerente de la compañía está muy agradecido con el trabajo de Alberto, dándole una carta con detalles del trabajo superior que ha hecho por varios años. Estoy muy orgullosa de mis hijos por el esfuerzo que demuestran.
Gracias a Dios, con muchas ganas e interés, no dejo de aprender porque la vida es una escuela. Siempre vamos a seguir aprendiendo porque el que no lo hace se queda a atrás. Siempre tenemos que seguir adelante. How en día mis hijos y yo somos mas unidos y nos comunicamos mucho más. Gracias a la paciencia, la educación, y a poner en práctica lo que aprendo para que mi hijo siga avanzando al compas del resto de la familia.

The Impact of COVID-19 in Families ~ The Story of Our Family

Covid-19 impacted the whole world, because a global pandemic occurred. My children and I, like many other families, became infected and had to isolate ourselves from others and stay home. I noticed how my children changed and regressed. It was very shocking not to be able to go out to work, and to see he usual routines lost from one day to the next. My son Alberto, who lives with Autism, was much more shocked because everything was confusing and had changed so suddenly. Assimilating what was happening was not easy for Alberto. He would ask “where is the pandemic?”, “why did we have to get vaccinated and wear masks?”
With no other choice, face the situation. I would have to be strong at all costs because my children needed me. I knew I would have to be positive and seek relief within a negative and uncertain experience. The impact was very hard for me to overcome and evaluate the emergency that arose at home. It wasn’t easy, but I realized how important mom is at home. My children, although both already adults, were alone and without direction. I began to dedicate more time to them and to understand more deeply what was happening to them so that I could help them. At that time, I went back a lot to the education of so many years that the Lanterman Regional Center has given me, and little by little ideas began to emerge on how to deal with the pandemic.
I began working more closely with Alberto to educate him about the pandemic and how to keep his mind occupied with positive things and not the endless questions. I focused on my son’s well-being because his world changed completely, and the blow was immense. That time was hard to master, but I didn’t give up. I sought out the team of people who worked with my son, psychologist, Ana Delia Hernandez, and we implemented strategies for him to focus on creative interests to pass the time, keep busy, and to reduce negative emotions.
I also received help from Citi Bank manager, Dolores Martinez, along with the young man, Edward Canton, who also works at the bank. With their help, Alberto has learned how to change, withdraw and deposit money in the bank. He also knows how to use the debit card when making purchases. I am very grateful to the community for helping my son to continue learning. I am also grateful to the Self Determination group which I belong. This group is about becoming independent of tradition so that young people can continue to develop and complete learning goals.
Sports, exercise, technology, and socialization are topics that I would like my son to develop more deeply. At the moment Alberto plays in a bowling league on Saturdays and is very skilled in the sport. He has a lot of fun and has friends in the league. He knows how to communicate on the phone, send texts, and make video calls. Being in contact with him is important for his safety and for when I need to communicate with him during his walks in the community. Alberto loves to know and visit new stores that have the things that interest him, such as, for example, he is fascinated by comic magazines, Japanese anime cartoons and electronic games.
Additionally, Alberto is also employed by Shredders, a paper shredding services company. The Company Manager is very grateful for Alberto’s work, giving him a letter detailing the superior work he has done for several years. I am very proud of my children for the effort they show.
Thank God, with a lot of desire and interest, I don’t stop learning because life is a school. We will always continue learning because those who don’t are left behind. We always have to move forward. How today y children and I are closer and we communicate much more. Thanks to patience, education, and putting into practice what I learn so that my son continues to advance to the rhythm of the rest of the family.
