As part of our 60 Highlights for 60 Years series, we’re highlighting housing supports that may be available to adults served by Lanterman Regional Center.
Housing stability helps individuals with developmental disabilities remain in their communities and live in the least restrictive environment possible. Service Coordinators work with individuals on an Individual Program Plan (IPP) to maximize independence and community inclusion.
Adults may choose to live with their family or in an apartment on their own. Depending on each person’s goals and support needs, the IPP process may identify services such as Independent Living Services (ILS), Supported Living Services (SLS), or licensed residential options.
Today we focus on the services that help adults served by the regional center to live independently.
- Independent Living Services (ILS): Time-limited training for adults who plan to move out or are already living independently. Supports may include budgeting/money management, household chores, meal preparation, community access, public transportation, accessing generic resources and other daily living skills.
- Supported Living Services (SLS): Services designed for adults living in their own home or apartment that are intended to complement natural or generic support such as In Home Supportive Services (IHSS). Supports may include daily living skills training, social and behavioral support, budgeting and money management, 24/7 emergency support, and possibly even assistance in finding a place to live.
Services are always individualized as one person may need ongoing support, while another may only require training services with the goal of increasing their ability to meet their needs without support.
