Today we’re spotlighting Lanterman’s Assistive Technology program as part of our 60 Highlights for 60 Years. Through a range of technology solutions, this program helps maximize potential, increase independence and expand access to everyday activities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Our Assistive Technology Partnership
More than 15 years ago, Lanterman partnered with the Assistive Technology Exchange Center (ATEC), a program of Goodwill of Orange County, to provide assistive technology (AT) services to individuals we serve.
ATEC has served Southern California since 1996, with a team of speech-language pathologists and assistive technology specialists who help identify practical tools and supports that increase independence and participation.
What Is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology includes tools, devices, equipment and product systems that make everyday tasks easier and support greater independence — from simple, low-tech supports to more complex devices. When matched to an individual’s unique needs, it can promote independence, self-reliance, access to meaningful opportunities and overall quality of life.
Finding the right solution can take time and may include an equipment trial period. Individualized assessment, training and follow-up support help ensure the technology is practical and appropriate for the person using it.
