As part of our 60 Highlights for 60 Years series, we’re spotlighting the two vital roles behind the success of our self-directed programs: the Self-Determination Program (SDP) and Participant-Directed Services (PDS). These programs give individuals with disabilities ultimate control over their funding, services and daily support team. Today, we recognize Karina Michel, Self-Determination Program Coordinator, and Zuleyma Parra, Participant Choice Specialist, for their key roles.
Karina Michel: The Face and Vision of SDP
Transitioning into SDP can often feel like an overwhelming journey for families, but Karina’s knowledge, patience and commitment make the entire process feel seamless and manageable.
Karina’s role involves interacting with the community and assisting tremendously with the transition into SDP. Karina facilitates the monthly SDP support group, reports on the progress and implementation of SDP at the monthly LVAC meetings, and reviews proposed budgets and spending plans to ensure that they’re aligned with DDS approved service categories. Behind the scenes, she’s a gifted trainer who breaks down complex programmatic concepts into practical guidance for service coordinators, approaching every challenge with compassion and a solutions-focused mindset.
Zuleyma Parra: Championing Alternative Service Delivery for PDS
We also highlight Zuleyma Parra for her work in guiding Participant-Directed Services at Lanterman. This past year, families faced serious challenges regarding parent purchase reimbursements. Zuleyma spearheaded partnerships to connect our Center with multiple Financial Management Services (FMS) providers, creating a smoother experience and more choices for our families.
Zuleyma balances systemic innovation with human connection. Through these administrative shifts, she made sure our service coordinators felt supported by designing processes that are easy to follow and supporting service coordinators as a go-to trainer and collaborator.
Thank you, Karina and Zuleyma, for the tremendous impact you make daily on our families, Center and community!
