As we close out our celebration of Disability Pride Month, we’re spotlighting a program built on the very values that disability pride honors — self-advocacy, independence and dignity: California’s Self-Determination Program (SDP).
SDP gives participants more freedom and control over how their services are provided and who provides them. It’s a unique alternative to the traditional regional center system, rooted in the belief that people with disabilities deserve to live life to the fullest and on their own terms.
Established by California State Law in 2013, SDP is built on five pillars:
- Freedom — the right to plan your own life and make your own decisions
- Authority — control over a budget to purchase the services and supports you choose
- Support — the ability to arrange resources and choose the people who help you live, work, and play
- Responsibility — the power to make decisions in your own life
- Confirmation — recognition that you are the decision-maker in your own life
That’s what disability pride is about, too – not asking for permission to live your life but owning it. “Nothing about me without me.”
In Self-Determination, YOU choose who provides your services and how much you will pay for them. Self-Determination gives you the choice and freedom to purchase services that help you meet your long- and short-term goals to live your life, your way.
Want more control and flexibility over your services? Curious about social and recreational options? SDP might be right for you. Stay tuned for more on the people, meetings and SDP resources at Lanterman — and for more information check out: Self-Determination Program
