As part of our 60 Highlights for 60 Years, we are proud to share the inspiring stories of the individuals, parents and caregivers we serve. One such highlight comes from Maria Santiago, mother of Jerome Santiago.
The family’s journey with Lanterman started when Jerome was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at two and a half years old. Their developmental pediatrician, understanding the family’s concerns, referred them to the Regional Center. While navigating the system felt overwhelming and frustrating at times, dedicated staff members guided them through every step. The Center immediately helped them secure an early intervention class, speech therapy, occupational therapy and a school district evaluation.
Early intervention services laid a lasting foundation for Jerome’s development. This progress continued seamlessly as he transitioned into school-age services, where his Service Coordinator, Tamar Meguerian, remains a strong source of support. Ms. Maria noted that Ms. Meguerian successfully referred Jerome, who is now 12, to a social skills program that significantly enhanced his communication and socialization.
Additionally, through Lanterman Regional Center advocacy, the family secured the maximum number of In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) hours, which, alongside their utilized respite hours, provides vital assistance. The family continues to rely on the Regional Center’s ongoing support. Ms. Meguerian remains exceptionally accessible by phone and e-mail, consistently checking in on the family between annual meetings to ensure Jerome has everything he needs.
Reflecting on this support, Mrs. Santiago shared: “Without a program like the Regional Center, it is difficult to imagine how families survive and stay strong. Congratulations to the Regional Center on its 60th Anniversary, and may God bless the staff. We must all join together to ensure the Regional Center continues to provide this vital support.”
Raising a child with special needs has ultimately made the Santiago family stronger and more determined to advocate for Jerome. Through this partnership, they successfully secured essential services and benefits they didn’t even know they were qualified to receive.
