Early Start to Early Childhood Transition: A Bridge to What’s Next

The transition from Early Start to Early Childhood services is a significant milestone, and for many families, it can feel overwhelming. Moving from California’s Early Intervention program for children birth to 3 into special education services through the school district involves specific timelines, assessments, and decisions that can feel like a lot to navigate all at once.

At Lanterman Regional Center, we see this transition as something worth celebrating. It marks real progress and we’re here to make sure families feel informed, supported and ready for what comes next.

After Early Start, some children may no longer require ongoing services, while others may qualify to continue receiving regional center support after age 3. Whatever path lies ahead, no family should have to figure it out alone.

This past April, Lanterman hosted its Early Start to Early Childhood Transition Conference and Resource Fair — a hybrid event offered both in-person and virtually. Families received guidance on eligibility assessments, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) development process, school placement options, and strategies for a successful transition. Representatives from local school districts and education partners — including LAUSD, BUSD, GUSD, PUSD, and the Foothill SELPA — were on hand, alongside Lanterman staff who shared information about regional center services available after age 3.

The Resource Fair gave families a chance to connect with community partners including the Hope on Wheels Mobile Unit and Special Flavors Community Kitchen, with raffles and giveaways rounding out the day.

If your family is approaching this transition, know that Lanterman is here to help support you along the way.
