Highlight 26: Getting a Good Start

Graphic headlined "Early Start: Getting a Good Start," with illustrated children's handprints.

Almost 1 in every 6 children in the United States has a developmental delay, and caring for a child with one can feel overwhelming for any parent. California’s Early Start program is here to help your family get answers, support and services during your child’s first 3 years of life.

We know that the earlier a child receives the right services, the more successful a family can be in minimizing or preventing future challenges. That’s why we work closely with parents to help your child make meaningful developmental progress through early intervention.

Early Start, run through California’s regional center system, serves infants and toddlers from birth to age 3 who have developmental delays or disabilities. It’s free to access, regardless of family income or immigration status.

Getting started always begins with a referral to the regional center, whether it’s from you, your doctor, or a caregiver. With your consent, your child is evaluated, and if eligible, your family and a team create an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). You are the most important member of this team; you’re welcome to invite family, friends or an advocate, and you have the right to an interpreter. The IFSP reflects your child’s strengths and needs, your family’s priorities, and the services your child will receive.

Services are matched to your child’s needs and may include speech, physical, or occupational therapy, family training, specialized instruction, and infant development services, usually starting within 45 days, often right in your home or community.

Early Start ends at age 3, but planning for what’s next begins well before that, with a transition conference at least 90 days before your child’s birthday.

At Lanterman Regional Center, we’re grateful to walk this journey with you and remain committed to supporting your child’s growth every step of the way.
