A Cup of Tea, A Group of Siblings, A Great Deal of Support – All This and More at Alson’s Tea ~ A Day for Siblings

Being the sibling of a younger or older brother or sister with special needs brings with it a unique set of experiences and challenges shared only by other siblings.

Family Support Specialist Edward Perez shares, “Through our sibling support groups, we’ve repeatedly heard from the siblings participating how much they appreciate spending time with other children who know what it’s like to have a sibling with special needs and who share the stresses that can be placed on the other children in a family. And also who understand what it’s like to balance the desire to spend time with their sibling and defend them, with being embarrassed by them and resenting the additional family time devoted to their sibling.”

Lanterman Clients Birth to 17 Smiling Brighter Through Give Kids a Smile

On the first Friday in February,  Lanterman participated in the Give Kids A Smile annual one-day volunteer initiative to provide education, preventive care and restorative services to children from low-income families who do not have access to care and would not otherwise get the dental care they need.

Dentists Fariborz Rodef, Margaret Paul and Diana Zschaschel, all three with special needs experience, volunteered time away from their practices to provide dental screenings to 62 Lanterman children birth to 17 with special needs whose oral health care needs are underserved. Hygienists Leticia Reyes, RDH, Christina Macasaet, RDA, and Sunny Ivanyi, RDHAP, also volunteered their time.

It’s a Toy Story at the Koch-Young Resource Center Between Toy Loans, Workshops and Playgroups

If you’re ever at the Koch-Young Resource Center during one of the ongoing six-session playgroups coordinated by the Resource Center, you can’t help but notice the singing, laughing, banging on drums, and all of the other sounds that are associated with children playing and having fun.

Made possible by generous grant funding from the Fred and June MacMurray Foundation the toy loan program and playgroups have seen a very successful first six months.

“Go Away Big Green Monster” a Crowd Favorite During Read Across America Event at KYRC

In the Koch-Young Resource Center’s first year participating in the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day on March 2, children and their parents were treated to a reading of “Go Away Big Green Monster,” a favorite read of many of the young children served by Lanterman Regional Center.

Fires, Floods, Earthquakes! Oh My! – Safety Fair Helped Families Prepare for the Realities of Living in Los Angeles

During the past two months, we have seen one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded hit Japan followed by a devastating tsunami, most of Western Texas impacted by wildfires, the largest number of tornados on history passed through the Midwest and South causing massive destruction, and immense flooding along the entire stretch of the Mississippi River that has destroyed entire towns and ruined huge swaths of farmland.

The one thing that all of these natural disasters have shown is that the more prepared you are the better chance you and your family have of not only surviving the disaster itself, but also the days and months afterward.
