June 5 ~ Parents and Play: Learn Strategies for Making Play Fun and Meaningful

As a parent, you are your child’s first playmate and teacher. This is not always an easy job, particularly for parents of children with special needs.

Come attend a one-hour workshop on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lanterman, to fine tune your play skills and get some new ideas on how to work with your child to build his/her skills. Learn strategies to keep play fun and engaging for you and your child.

June 21 ~ Funding Sources for Assistive Technology Webinar

The second workshop in the 2012 Assistive Technology Workshop Series hosted by Lanterman Regional Center and ATEC will address the topic of funding sources for assistive technology.

The one-hour workshop is scheduled for Thursday, June 21, 2012, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and will provide people with disabilities, families, caregivers, professionals, and those interested in AT greater knowledge and resources.

The workshop will be presented via webinar and in-person at Lanterman Regional Center.

June 21 ~ Come Read “Frida” During KYRC Storytime

Join the Koch-Young Resource Center for storytime on Thursday, June 21, 2012, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., for a reading of "Frida."

Frida had a difficult life as a little child, as a result she created beautiful paintings to make the challenges of life easier…

June 26 ~ IEP and Inclusion Training

This session of the IEP and Inclusion training is being offered in English and is for families with school-age children. Scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lanterman, the topics that will be covered include:

- A general overview of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process
- Eligibility requirements for school district special education services
- Special education rights and responsibilities
- Importance of inclusion at school and in the community
- Tips for successfully including your child

Presenters at the training will include an attorney from the Whittier Law Clinic and a regional manager from Lanterman.

July 2 ~ Playgroup for Children 2 to 5 Years of Age Starts

Quality play time with parents can lead to improvements in skills such as communication, engagement, sensory awareness, cognitive ability and creativity.

This session of the parent-child playgroups will run for six weeks, starting on Monday, July 2, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lanterman, and will provide caregivers with play strategies and tips for engaging children with special needs to make playtime more fun and meaningful as well as exposure to a variety of play mediums and ideas for low-budget activities that can be done at home.

Caregivers will also get expert advice and answers to questions from therapists who will visit the group.

PCDA and Lanterman present Toddler Talk, an eight-session parent/child summer speech program designed for children 2 to 3 years of age that starts on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lanterman.

Parents will learn tips and techniques to build language skills.

July 12 ~ Music Together: A Parent and Me Music Series Starts

PCDA and Lanterman present Music Together, an eight-week series starting Thursday, July 12, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Lanterman, which brings together families in sharing songs, instrument play, rhythm chants and movement activities in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting.

Music is learned through developmentally appropriate activities that support and respect the unique learning styles of young children from 1 to 5 years of age. Infants, toddlers and preschoolers participate at their own levels in family-style classes of mixed ages.
