The Transition of Day Supports: From Consumers to Producers

This is the first time we are seeing the fiduciary and regulatory authorities and the provider community come together promoting all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to have valued roles in their communities. This transition results from a revision in the rules of the HCBS Waiver, the Olmstead Act and the enhanced belief of professionals, families and self-advocates, that adults with I/DD should work and volunteer in fully-integrated community-based settings. Consequently the providers of day services and supports are facing significant changes in how to transition their current services and provide supports to achieve this transition.

Tom will also discuss the impact these changes have on families of both adults and school-aged children transitioning to adulthood. Their children will be offered options and choices of what kind of job they want or where their interests lie in working and volunteering. Tom will discuss the critical role parents and family members play as well as strategies to promote productive lives for their family members with I/DD. They will also play a valuable role in working hand in hand with Day Program Providers in addressing their family members’ support needs as they transition to community-based opportunities.

Day Program providers are in the midst of addressing significant clinical, resource, social and environmental challenges in meeting these new expectations. In this informative session, Tom Pomeranz will discuss the nature of these challenges and approaches to achieve this transition for people with I/DD whose quality of life has been diminished both by isolation from society and denial of a productive day by neither being employed (the preferred option) and/or supported in meaningful volunteering activities.

In addition to providing participants with effective clinical and management strategies to achieve this transition, Tom will give participants a sense of vision, excitement and enthusiasm for the work ahead. Meaningful lives for people with I/DD where they can work and volunteer will allow individuals to gain dignity and respect as adult members of their communities.

Cost: $10.00 (Continental Breakfast Provided)
