Nuturing the Development of Young Children with Dr. Tom Pomeranz

What we know is that early intervention for children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities can have profound impact on improving quality of life. In this session Dr. Tom Pomeranz will discuss a variety of strategies that can easily be utilized to promote and facilitate the development of young children with intellectual and other
developmental disabilities.

Outside the realm of typically utilized interventions e.g. OT, PT, Speech/Language, Tom will discuss the importance of such stategies as thinking out loud, non-contingent touching, floor play, selecting toys that maximize learning, supporting participation in all aspects of childrens’ lives, proactively responding to behavioral issues and many others. Tom will also explain the importance of compensating for the fact that many children with intellectual and
other developmental disabilities “don’t push back” and therefore, parents must shape the behavior to support their child's independence.

This session is intended for parents and professionals involved with children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, ages birth to 5 years of age.
